Depression and Anxiety in Dogs

Humans tend to think of our canine friends as the happiest of all creatures.

With all the tail wagging, face licking, and cuddling going in, is it even possible that dog depression and anxiety actually exist?

The short answer: yes.

However, there are certain signs to look out for. Like human beings, dogs sometimes feel emotionally down.

Have you ever noticed that, when you feel sad or anxious, your dog may exhibit many of the same symptoms?

This happens because dogs pick up on human emotions. And, if you’re having a rough time, then your best friend may feel sympathetic toward you. Luckily, these “sympathy pains” subside when you feel better.

However, occasionally, dogs will endure heightened anxiety that persists. As your dog’s caregiver, it’s up to you to help.

The first step — determine anxious or depressive symptoms.

If your canine comrade is not acting like his normal, chipper self, be on the lookout for anxious and depressive symptoms. NOTE: look especially hard for persisting symptoms that aren’t typical of your dog’s normal behavior.
Some common symptoms include:

  • The desire to hide or be left alone.
  • Seeking more attention than usual—especially after an event such as death of another pet or moving.
  • Disinterest in playing, going for walks, or activities your dog typically enjoys.
  • Shaking and panting that happen excessively. This is normal during periods of heightened anxiety, such as a fireworks display or a thunderstorm.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Compulsive chewing and licking of her own fur.

The next step — do something about it.

Depression and anxiety within dogs can be treated the way humans treat these afflictions. To be very clear: I don’t mean to imply that anyone should give their dogs prescription drugs.

However, depression and anxiety can be largely conquered with increased exercise and a healthy pet food diet.
The caveat is, sometimes anxious and depressed pets need additional help. For this reason, I recommend…
