Benefits of Home Cooked Food For Dogs and Cats

There are multiple reasons to prepare home-cooked food for your pet. The most important thing is that you know exactly what your pet is eating. In an article in the Journal of Animal Physiology and Nutrition, the authors tested several high-end venison-based dog foods for common allergens. Surprisingly, all of them contained beef, soy, and poultry in detectable amounts, ingredients not listed on the label.

After the major pet food recall in 2006, many people became suspicious of commercial pet foods and turned to home-cooked diets or premium brands they believed they could trust. However, a more recent recall reinforced a harsh reality: many brands are manufactured in the same facilities. If something goes wrong at one plant, every product that comes out of it is affected.

That particular recall was due to salmonella contamination, which made not only dogs sick, but also their humans. If you have to wash your hands after feeding your pet, you have to wonder: how safe is that food really?

Evolving Diets for Dogs and Cats

Many people believe that raw food is the ancestral diet for pets, and it is. But it was also the ancestral diet for humans. Still, not many would argue that raw food is the best long-term diet for people.

Just like us, dogs have evolved over thousands of years. And so have their digestive systems. Today, dogs and cats are biologically omnivores.

In fact, William D. Cusick's book Canine Nutrition: Choosing the Best Food for Your Breed analyzes the regions where different dog breeds originated and the types of food they would have eaten based on local availability. Those foods are far removed from the highly processed kibble most pets eat today.

The Original CrockPET Diet®: A Long-Term Strategy for Health

Cooking for your pet gives you control and peace of mind, but it also gives your pet a nutritional foundation tailored to their specific needs.

The Original CrockPET Diet® is more than just a recipe, it’s a form of food therapy based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. It’s designed to support hot and blood-deficient pets and aims to reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.

This is a long-term strategy. While results may take several weeks to months to become apparent, many pet parents notice shinier, silkier coats within just 1–2 weeks.

It certainly worked for Sammy. Check out his transformation and his mom’s heartwarming testimonial:

“My little Maltese Poodle (Sammy) is 11 years old & was looking very sick, sad & old. He had big tear stains & hardly came out to socialize, we were quite worried. His teeth even started to break.

After reading your posts, I started cooking your CrockPET Diet for him. Wow, what a change, in only one month, he looks completely different. His fur is lovely & white, no tear stains, and he is bouncy, happy, & playful again. He looks so much younger in only ONE MONTH! He has even started playing with his toys again & enjoys cuddles more than ever. My hubby & I are truly grateful for what you do, thank you!

The food I was feeding him was raw, & I truly believed I was giving him the best as it was recommended by a holistic vet. He enjoys CrockPET far more, & it is obviously a far better choice!

My next step is to work on his gut to help ease his itchy, scratchy allergies. I just couldn’t help telling you how much you have helped us. I can’t thank you enough!”

Cooking for Your Pet: Gut Health

An all-natural, home-cooked diet is essential to restoring and maintaining your pet’s gut health. Most commercial pet foods disrupt the balance of a healthy gut due to:

  • Highly processed fillers
  • Lack of moisture
  • Ingredients that can cause food sensitivities

When your pet’s gut becomes imbalanced, you may notice chronic vomiting, diarrhea, obesity, fatigue, and other persistent health issues. These symptoms often won’t resolve until the diet changes.

If this sounds familiar, stop wasting money on endless vet visits and medications that only mask the symptoms. Instead, consider my Gut Instincts: Natural Digestion and GI Health Course. This course includes:

  • My special rotation diet recipes
  • Video trainings
  • Food planning worksheets

It worked for Morgan the dog, and I believe it can work for your pet too.

Morgan, a 13-year-old Welsh Terrier, came into the office suffering from chronic inflammatory bowel disease and the early stages of kidney failure. Her parents noticed that she looked and acted much older and were concerned her quality of life was slipping away.

With a rotation and elimination diet and supplements to support her gut and kidneys, Morgan’s transformation was stunning. From March to July, her internal health was reflected in a dramatically improved coat color and renewed energy. She’s now back to enjoying long walks and chasing after the ball, just like she used to.

Cooking for Your Pet: Kidney Health

Home-cooked meals can also act as powerful food therapy for pets suffering from kidney disease. Most commercial pet foods, especially dry kibble, lack the moisture necessary to keep the kidneys functioning optimally. Even if your pet has access to fresh water, dry food alone creates unnecessary strain on the kidneys and increases the risk of disease.

For pets already diagnosed with kidney disease, dry or heavily processed food can worsen symptoms and accelerate damage. That’s why I created the 5-Step Comprehensive Kidney Health Program, a guide designed to ease suffering and help extend your pet’s life. This program includes:

  • Home-cooked food recipes specifically for kidney support
  • Education about kidney disease and dietary adjustments
  • Ongoing support and guidance from me and my team

Here’s what pet parents are saying:

“Dr. Ruth and the Kidney Health Program helped Sabrina feel like a kitten again.”
“We found out that Sabrina, our 14-year-old kitty, had kidney failure because she became so ill she had to go to an emergency hospital. We took her to Dr. Ruth Roberts, as the specialists had little to offer besides a kidney diet that Sabrina hated.

Dr. Ruth started her on home-cooked food that she loved, several supplements, and later, stem cell therapy. In a matter of weeks, Sabrina felt like a kitten again. Now at 16, she is more spry than when she was 12!”

“I would have lost Cody a year and a half sooner if Dr. Ruth had not been there to help.”
“My dog Cody was diagnosed with congenital kidney failure at 4 years old, and the specialist told us he wouldn’t make it a year. We were devastated.

Dr. Ruth treated him with love and the best treatments she had to offer. Cody ended up living 2 ½ more years after his diagnosis of stage 3 chronic kidney disease. I know I would have lost him much sooner without Dr. Ruth.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cooking for my pet more expensive than buying commercial pet food?

Not necessarily. While some high-quality ingredients may cost more than kibble, you’re investing in your pet’s long-term health. Many pet parents find they save money on vet visits and medications once their pet is eating a fresh, balanced diet.

How do I know if my home-cooked meals are nutritionally complete for my pet?

Following a veterinary-developed recipe like The Original CrockPET Diet® ensures your pet gets balanced nutrition, including the right proportions of protein, fat, fiber, and essential vitamins and minerals.

Can I switch my pet to a home-cooked diet overnight?

It’s best to transition gradually over 5–7 days. Start by mixing small amounts of home-cooked food into your pet’s current diet, then slowly increase the portion while reducing the old food to avoid digestive upset.

Do I still need supplements if I’m cooking for my pet?

Yes, most home-cooked diets benefit from targeted supplements to fill nutritional gaps. For example, omega-3 fatty acids for skin and coat, probiotics for gut health, or kidney-supporting nutrients depending on your pet’s needs.
