In this episode of Healing Tails, Dr. Ruth Roberts sits down with clinical nutritionist Leah Bookhamer to explore the root causes of toxin buildup in pets and how holistic detox practices can help them truly thrive. Tune in to learn how everyday choices, from food to cleaning products can transform your pet’s health.
Episode Summary
In this episode of Healing Tails, Dr. Ruth Roberts welcomes Leah Bookhamer, a clinical nutritionist whose inspiring journey from personal healing to holistic pet care has helped countless pet parents rethink wellness from the inside out. Leah shares how her own health struggles led her to discover the power of foundational nutrition and natural healing—and how those same principles can radically improve the lives of our pets.
Together, Dr. Ruth and Leah dive deep into the importance of detoxification for both humans and animals. They uncover how everyday exposure to toxins, from food, water, air, and even household products, can silently impact pets’ health, leading to issues like allergies, fatigue, and chronic illness. Leah explains how true detox isn’t about quick cleanses or trendy supplements, but rather supporting the body’s natural drainage systems like the liver, kidneys, and gut for long-term vitality.
Leah also introduces her groundbreaking wellness brand, PetAMPLife, designed to help pets detox gently and effectively. Through innovative products such as TICA, Daily Detox, and Longevity, her approach focuses on restoring balance at the cellular level and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. She and Dr. Ruth discuss how these formulas stand apart from typical “detox in a bottle” products by addressing the root cause of imbalance rather than masking symptoms.
As the episode wraps up, Dr. Ruth and Leah remind listeners that detoxing is not optional, it’s essential in today’s world. Pet parents can make simple yet powerful lifestyle changes like swapping plastic bowls for stainless steel, choosing non-toxic cleaners, and focusing on whole, nutrient-rich foods. Tune in to learn how you can help your pets live longer, healthier, and happier lives by embracing daily detox as a lifestyle, not just a trend.

[01:01:15:29 - 01:01:22:20]
Leah Bookhamer
Thank you, Dr. Ruth. That's a glowing intro for me. I appreciate that.
[01:01:23:23 - 01:01:24:07]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
That's all you.
[01:01:26:12 - 01:01:27:17]
Leah Bookhamer
It's definitely been a journey.
[01:01:28:24 - 01:01:54:09]
Leah Bookhamer
And like so many who find their way into holistic health, I started this journey because I was sick and I was not getting answers. I was told I was too stressed or I was this. I needed more sleep. All the things that I just looked at him like, what the heck are you talking about? This is not what's going on. 10, 15 years ago, there was less listening.
[01:01:55:11 - 01:02:07:13]
Leah Bookhamer
What changed me was a holistic practitioner that I found just by chance. And he listened and he put the sledgehammer down and said, you've got to do this and you've got to do that.
[01:02:08:13 - 01:02:13:03]
Leah Bookhamer
And I took his advice and ran with it and started healing.
[01:02:14:06 - 01:02:34:12]
Leah Bookhamer
So from that moment, I knew that I'd found the right path and I haven't looked back. I just kept learning and learning. One of my first steps was getting into essential oils. And then from that, I knew that, okay, these can be helpful in certain aspects, but they're not getting to the root cause. So I just kept digging.
[01:02:35:21 - 01:02:55:14]
Leah Bookhamer
I was looking for root cause before that was a term and I didn't even know the term, but I knew it was, I was not getting there. So anyway, I began healing and finding answers for my own health and began applying my training for my health to my, specifically my dogs.
[01:02:56:23 - 01:04:14:22]
Leah Bookhamer
Switched to all organic for my chickens because what I feed them then in turn feeds me. So switched that up. They were still missing pieces. I still had dogs dying of cancer and strange illnesses, even though they were living to 12 and 15, which is normal air quote, right? I don't think it is. I think our dogs can live and cats can live so much longer if we give them the foundation to thrive and not just survive. So after my last dog that passed, he barely made eight. And that's when I was really starting to bang my head, what is going on? And literally two weeks later, you popped up in my radar and my world changed with my pets. I take them and I, you just feel that missing piece that I needed and the confidence that I needed to actually feed them real food. And so being told, no, don't feed them what you eat. Right. Even though that didn't sound logical to me, but you gave me that confidence to take it and run with it. So yeah, that's where I am. Yeah. It's been amazing.
[01:04:16:00 - 01:04:54:01]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Cool. So, but you've got a whole new project going on and just launched. And I think that what you're doing with pet amp life is really groundbreaking in the holistic pet health world. There's loads and loads of detox products, but this is really a system that really gets towards the root causes of detoxification and supporting the body to be able to do what it should be able to do. So what inspired you to get this going and get this business off the ground?
[01:04:55:03 - 01:05:15:18]
Leah Bookhamer
So it's, you just said it, root cause, you know, what's going on. The same thing that was going on in my body and most people out there, toxins. This world is such a toxic place and pet life was inspired by our deep love for animals.
[01:05:16:23 - 01:05:20:26]
Leah Bookhamer
And people just don't realize the how toxic our world is.
[01:05:21:27 - 01:06:18:15]
Leah Bookhamer
I live kind of in a bubble because I'm with, you know, when I communicate with a lot of like-minded people like me, but then when I get out in the world, I realize how most people don't understand. And they look at me when I start talking about this, like deer in the headlights. So it's bringing this to the forefront for our pets, which again, deer in the headlights with people. But our pets are being poisoned slowly every day, just like we are. And our bodies do have that capability to detox, but with the impact that we're getting from our air, from our water, from food even toxins or organs or detox organs are needing help. The products that I use to get me back on my health journey is what inspired us to create these for dogs.
[01:06:19:25 - 01:06:28:26]
Leah Bookhamer
And I mean, our pets are even more affected because they're closer to the ground, right? They're eating off the floor sometimes.
[01:06:30:03 - 01:06:31:02]
Leah Bookhamer
They're licking their paws.
[01:06:32:02 -01:07:21:21]
Leah Bookhamer
Most people give their pets tap water, which if you ever have your water evaluated, you're not using some kind of filtration system, chlorine, fluoride, prescription medicines that have leached into the groundwater, a ton of just toxic chemicals in there. So this is, you know, we need to support our pets' bodies along with ours. I mean, detox is a buzzword out there, but it needs to be part of our lifestyle, not just a cleanse, if you will. This is more than just a cleanse. It's digging deep and helping things to continue to shuttle out of the body.
[01:07:22:23 - 01:07:24:03]
Leah Bookhamer
So yeah.
[01:07:25:20 - 01:07:37:25]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
And I mean, I think you brought up a good point. It's like detox is the big buzzword out there. But what does that really mean? Right? What does that mean in the context of pet health?
[01:07:39:09 -01:08:32:20]
Leah Bookhamer
Yeah. So I mean, like most people, they think it's like drinking a green juice drink three days in a row or a week or water. I mean, I guess if you drink just water for a month, you're going to detox, but our bodies still need help. So what a detox really means in pet health and why it's so critical today is we need to support the liver, the kidneys, the gut, the skin, the lymphatic system that are all built to filter toxins. And that's the good news. But the problem is there's over 86,000 chemical substances manufactured or imported into the U.S. and many of which are in our air or food or water or homes. We're using a lot of bad stuff to clean with.
[01:08:34:03 - 01:08:52:00]
Leah Bookhamer
Just a little side note, I had a mobile groomer come to me to brush my dogs out and she had a can of Lysol. Can I say that Lysol? Lysol. She goes, "Do you mind if I spray this to keep the flies away?" I said, "Actually, I do. It's a neurotoxin."
[01:08:53:18 - 01:09:13:20]
Leah Bookhamer
So I just educated her a little bit, again, during the headlights, right? So when those detox pathways get overwhelmed, toxins will build up in the body and they'll recirculate. Then they get embedded into the cells causing cellular decline that lead to itchy skin. How many dogs out there have itchy skin?
[01:09:14:20 - 01:09:16:20]
Leah Bookhamer
Digestive issues, scratches, lethargy.
[01:09:17:20 - 01:09:30:22]
Leah Bookhamer
A lot of people don't realize that dogs are lethargic. They just think they're sleeping more. They're getting older. They're sleeping more. That may be partly true, but I think a lot of it is the overwhelm of toxins.
[01:09:32:03 - 01:09:34:21]
Leah Bookhamer
This root cause goes unaddressed.
[01:09:36:05 - 01:09:42:09]
Leah Bookhamer
Detox isn't just about adding a supplement. It's about supporting natural drainage.
[01:09:43:24 - 01:09:52:15]
Leah Bookhamer
Especially the liver creating that thin bile flow. It shouldn't be thick and viscous. Binding and removing those stored toxins.
[01:09:53:20 - 01:10:03:21]
Leah Bookhamer
Reducing the daily toxin exposure in our homes. So doing our best to switch out plastic with stainless steel, ceramic, or glass.
[01:10:05:02 - 01:10:09:10]
Leah Bookhamer
And then working on repairing at the cellular level.
[01:10:10:15 -01:10:18:23]
Leah Bookhamer
When you're doing that deep detox, the cells need energy in order to help the body continue that.
[01:10:20:05 - 01:10:43:02]
Leah Bookhamer
That's why we have a product called Longevity to help support the energy of the cells. The mitochondria, which is your battery, your powerhouse. If that's getting sick and damaged, then that's when we start to feel fatigue and just sick. That's when illness starts to creep in.
[01:10:44:15 -01:10:51:12]
Leah Bookhamer
So a takeaway, detox is no longer optional. It's becoming essential in this world.
Right?
[01:10:52:16 - 01:11:04:13]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Right. Let's walk back a little bit and talk about the detox pathways again. So you mentioned them, but let's kind of break it down a little bit. So the liver is the one that most people think of.
[01:11:06:08 - 01:11:13:06]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
So what happens in the liver that things just go sideways and stop working?
[01:11:14:27 - 01:11:23:17]
Leah Bookhamer
So the liver is our main filtration for toxins. It converts harmful substances into waste for elimination.
[01:11:24:27 - 01:11:51:17]
Leah Bookhamer
But when we don't have the ability to shuttle it out or keep it moving, it'll keep recirculating through the body. And then that's where the toxins can then become embedded in cells and cause the cellular decline. And if the gallbladder, so the liver sends the toxins to the gallbladder for holding, is a part of the digestive process.
[01:11:52:20 - 01:12:10:19]
Leah Bookhamer
And if the liver's not functioning well, that bile that it sends to the gallbladder to hold just become thick and viscous and it will start basically clogging up the bile ducts and then the gallbladder is unable to do that squeeze of toxins.
[01:12:11:27 - 01:12:31:00]
Leah Bookhamer
Well it's the detox toxins really onto the food as it comes into the digestive process to break down the fatty acids for utilization. So then you've got a whole digestive issue starting and then we've got itchy skin and rashes and everything starts to kind of fall apart.
[01:12:32:06 - 01:12:32:13]
Leah Bookhamer
Right on.
[01:12:32:13 - 01:12:39:29]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
And I think you went through the other one. So the kidney is another important detoxification pathway or drainage pathway.
[01:12:41:09 - 01:12:43:02]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
The skin, which we forget about.
[01:12:43:02 - 01:12:44:12]
Leah Bookhamer
The skin. True.
[01:12:45:14 - 01:13:10:21]
Leah Bookhamer
The skin is more so for humans. It is for pets, very much so, but we don't even think about it that much for pets. So sweating is a detox process and pets really sweat on their own, their paws and their nose so they don't have a huge sweat pathway, if you will. So this is not as big as the human side, but it is still a very big part.
[01:13:11:24 - 01:13:12:01]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Right on.
[01:13:13:02 - 01:13:31:23]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
And also really the number one detox organ is the lung. But yeah, yeah, you know, so you breathe it in and then hopefully the body helps you breathe it back out. Right. And then, and then the gut. I mean, that is another pathway where we can find stuff up and pull it out of the body as well.
[01:13:32:24 - 01:14:13:24]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
So that's, I think that gets a little mysterious to a lot of folks when we talk about detoxification and they're like, well, you know, what, what are we actually doing? And so we talk about this stuff and it's like, ah, it's very confusing. And I think you, you mentioned that already that we're living in a world where the level of chemicals is just astronomically high. And unfortunately we've really contaminated everything. And for pets, especially their toxic burden is somewhere between three and 93 times hours. And that's why this is so critical for pets.
[01:14:14:27 - 01:14:25:08]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
So it's one of the five things I think of in terms of why pets are, are living shorter lives and living unhealthy lives.
[01:14:26:27 - 01:14:47:07]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
But having said all of that, there's the really horrible, ugly, awful stuff, but your company has created some very unique products to support pets to detoxify. So let's walk through how that works and, and what makes them different from other products on the market.
[01:14:48:15 - 01:15:05:14]
Leah Bookhamer
So we've got three signature products and our first one that I'm going to talk about is Toyota and I will try to announce that, that is an acronym.
[01:15:05:14 - 01:15:12:15]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
I know it's hard, ursodeoxycholic acid.
[01:15:12:15 - 01:15:36:24]
Leah Bookhamer
Yes. Okay. Anyway, we'll just call it TICA, so we're the first one to bring this type of product to market for pets. And what TICA does is it opens those detox pathways. So if you don't open the detox pathways when you're going to put your body through a deep cellular clean out the toxins process,
[01:15:37:26 - 01:15:48:29]
Leah Bookhamer
one will tank, will have those Herxheimer reactions and we call it Herx for short. So we want to eliminate that as much as possible.
[01:15:50:00 - 01:16:21:22]
Leah Bookhamer
And so the TICA works on the liver, helps the liver work more efficiently, helps it create a thin flowing bile to shuttle over to the gallbladder, which in turn supports the gut because you're able to now digest those fatty acids and have more nutrients into the body. So by optimizing the bile flow, TICA ensures toxins are being processed and eliminated effectively preventing that recirculation.
[01:16:22:29 - 01:16:39:16]
Leah Bookhamer
So that's the best place to start with anything. And I use it with my pets. They've been through a deep detox and now I just support them a couple of times a week by using TICA.
[01:16:41:14 -01:16:56:19]
Leah Bookhamer
Daily detox is our signature binder. So it is very important when you're rustling up those toxins to get them out of the body, you want to bind them to be eliminated.
[01:16:57:29 -01:17:40:07]
Leah Bookhamer
So daily detox combines scientifically proven binding agents that help attach to the pesticides, household chemicals and other pollutants. And it promotes gentle elimination while supporting gut integrity, immune function, mental clarity, and helps drive nutrients into the cells with its humic and folic acids in there. So there are other detox binders that have charcoal and clay. And the problem with those is that you need to take them away from food and you can't stay on long term because they can leach nutrients.
[01:17:41:25 - 01:17:49:17]
Leah Bookhamer
That's not true with the humic and the fulvic acid. They actually work well with food because they help drive nutrients into the cells.
[01:17:50:21 - 01:18:03:27]
Leah Bookhamer
So you can use, I just mix it in my pet's food. And then our other one is Longevity. We talked earlier about supporting our battery of our cells, our mitochondria, and keep us
[01:18:05:10 - 01:18:31:29]
Leah Bookhamer
understanding while we're working on detox. So Longevity is what that does. It supports the mitochondria and cellular health. So when there's toxin overload and that cellular decline, this is going to help with its folic acid, has co-cutan and resveratrol to help keep that energy and rebuild those cells and rebuild those mitochondria so they're strong and healthy.
[01:18:33:09 - 01:18:58:19]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
We mentioned earlier that really we ought to start thinking about detoxification as something that's going on an ongoing basis. But for pet parents that are just sort of starting to look into this, what are some signs or symptoms that they might see that would indicate that their pet could benefit from detoxification using products like PetAMP Life?
[01:19:00:10 - 01:19:03:22]
Leah Bookhamer
Well, there's a lot.
[01:19:05:13 -01:19:40:27]
Leah Bookhamer
So you've got skin issues, allergies, autoimmune disease, seizures, any pet with a seizure or neurological issues, GI problems like irritable bowels, liver or kidney concerns.
[01:19:25:17 - 01:19:40:27]
Leah Bookhamer
These pets have toxic burdens or impaired elimination, and that's where we come in to help open that up, shuttle out, and get things moving again and working on healing those cells over-medicated or over-vaccinated pets.
[01:19:42:06 - 01:20:25:29]
Leah Bookhamer
It's always good, especially right after vac*****. Pets living in a high-toxin environment like urban areas where there's pesticide-treated yards or homes with chemical cleaners, people who live near a golf course. The golf courses are big on herbicides.
Even puppies and young pets, so early support to help build a stronger foundation. So my tagline is "detoxing one bite at a time." I try to teach people, "You've got to have a foundation of food as your foundation." And now we also need to add in that lifestyle of detox as a foundation.
[01:20:25:29 - 01:20:27:01]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Right on.
[01:20:28:03 - 01:20:39:06]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
So are there some strategies aside from using supplements that pet parents could implement to help reduce the amount of toxins that their pets are exposed to?
[01:20:39:06 - 01:21:01:14]
Leah Bookhamer
Absolutely. So with mine, I switched all my plastic bowls to stainless steel, some ceramic. I actually had to get rid of the ceramic because it kept breaking. So mostly stainless steel in my house, and glass. So I don't have any plastic storage containers. It's all glass.
[01:21:03:11 -01:21:22:23]
Leah Bookhamer
Switching out your cleaners. I have a cleaner. I use this in a concentrate, and I just mix it depending on the room I'm cleaning. So I use it in the kitchen, the bathroom, my laundry. I can even dilute it way down and use it to bathe my pets.
[01:21:23:26 - 01:21:34:21]
Leah Bookhamer
So getting rid of candles that are not environmentally safe. Just plug in air fresheners using essential oils in the home.
[01:21:35:22 - 01:21:37:25]
Leah Bookhamer
Flee and tick meds.
[01:21:39:00 - 01:21:54:25]
Leah Bookhamer
Boy, those are so toxic. So using a mixture, I use a mixture of different essential oils before we go on a hike. I'll do a couple spritz in my hand and rub my hands all over my dogs. There's so many things when we get va********.
[01:21:55:25 - 01:22:03:17]
Leah Bookhamer
That's another toxic load on our pets. So it's big out there. Yeah, there's a lot of things we can do.
[01:22:03:17 - 01:22:19:00]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Right on. And I think that's critical too, because we can work on detoxification, and indeed we should. But more importantly, we should work on preventing the intake of more toxins. So that's super critical.
[01:22:20:12 - 01:22:31:03]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
So are there specific breeds or ages, that kind of stuff, that might benefit more from using detox products?
[01:22:31:03 - 01:23:03:17]
Leah Bookhamer
Yes. So breeds with detox challenges specifically. There are some that have a genetic predisposition. Now genetics don't mean that it's going to happen. It just means if the lifestyle allows it to, those snips of genes can be turned on. So labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, bulldogs are prone to allergies and skin issues that are linked to toxic buildup. Miniature snowsers and Westies have sensitive livers. So they're definitely willing to support their livers.
[01:23:04:22 - 01:23:33:07]
Leah Bookhamer
Boxers and shepherds have high inflammation and cancer risk. Then there's senior pets, which they say seven plus years old as a senior pet. They're aging organs, and if they've been in a toxic environment, they're even aging faster than they should. So they'll have slower detox pathways. PetAMPLife again is supporting those detox pathways and the mitochondrial health to slow the aging and boost the energy.
[01:23:34:17 - 01:23:42:02]
Leah Bookhamer
Pets with chronic conditions. So allergies, itchy skin, autoimmune disease, seizures.
[01:23:43:12 - 01:24:03:19]
Leah Bookhamer
I talked about a little touch on this a little bit earlier. Those toxic burdens that are impaired, that elimination is where the pet-up life is going to help clear that out. Over-medicated, over-evaluated pets, pets living in the high toxic environments that I mentioned earlier, and even the puppies.
[01:24:04:19 - 01:24:07:11]
Leah Bookhamer
Think about if you get a puppy,
[01:24:08:12 - 01:24:09:21]
Leah Bookhamer
and even if you rescue.
[01:24:11:03 - 01:24:28:21]
Leah Bookhamer
Also you don't know where the mother came from or what she was fed. That's so critical in those puppies and what their little bodies are dealing with. I had two from the same litter,
[01:24:29:22 - 01:24:46:18]
Leah Bookhamer
and I did know what the mother was fed. One of mine, when I started feeding her real food, this is before pet-up life, but she started detoxing like crazy. She lost all the hair on her back, back around her tail and stuff.
[01:24:48:06 - 01:24:55:13]
Leah Bookhamer
I was like, "Oh my gosh, I've been doing this with the human world." I'm like, "Is she detoxing?" Truly she was.
[01:24:58:00 - 01:25:04:26]
Leah Bookhamer
Puppies are not immune to being started on a detox process or supported.
[01:25:04:26 - 01:25:05:20]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Right on. Yeah.
[01:25:07:05 - 01:25:22:18]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
Something that's really critical to understand and part of why we're seeing chronic disease and other serious disease happen very young in life. Right. Younger and younger. There's so many dogs and cats. Right. Because mom has been exposed to a boatload of garbage,
[01:25:23:20 - 01:25:44:03]
Dr. Ruth Roberts
whether that's pesticides, herbicides, what have you. Also, if they're scavenging for food or they're eating low quality food, then they're going to take in all of the pesticides and things that are linked to corn, mycotoxins, all sorts of stuff. Right. I think that's critical to understand.

Dr. Ruth Roberts
What do you think the pet care industry gets wrong about detoxification and how are you starting to shift that narrative?
[01:25:54:22 - 01:26:03:20]
Leah Bookhamer
Most of the pet care industry treats detox like a buzzword or a quick fix if they even understand what it means.
[01:26:05:00 - 01:26:19:27]
Leah Bookhamer
That's really what's going on because many of the human doctors don't even understand. They just don't understand that it's critical in root cause and daily is truly necessary.
[01:26:21:11 - 01:26:27:14]
Leah Bookhamer
After you get through the initial detox, then it's just supporting long term.
[01:26:31:16 - 01:26:39:00]
Leah Bookhamer
Is the detox in a bottle mentality, if you will, that the one size fits all powders and three day cleanses, they don't work.
[01:26:40:06 - 01:26:50:14]
Leah Bookhamer
That's not doing what needs to be done. Real detox requires daily support and proper drainage. Go back to that drainage, drainage, drainage. You have to have that drainage.
[01:26:51:26 - 01:27:00:22]
Leah Bookhamer
Ignoring the root cause, many brands focus on masking the symptoms like the itchy skin or the allergies and they skip the question,
[01:27:01:29 - 01:27:37:06]
Leah Bookhamer
"Why is this body reacting in this way? What is causing it?" Looking at the environment, detox isn't about adding supplements. It's about removing everyday toxins as much as possible from our food, the water, our home. The environment is overlooked a lot. Tox isn't just about continuing the support of removing. Then there's the poor quality ingredients. Many products use ineffective doses,
[01:27:38:09 - 01:27:54:02]
Leah Bookhamer
filler ingredients and supplements, outdated science. It just recirculates in our mentality and in the toxic in our body. We don't open those pathways to shuttle it out.
[01:27:56:22 - 01:28:26:17]
Leah Bookhamer
We're here to educate. We don't want to scare people, but we want to make them aware of what's going on and understand what detox really is. It's gentle, it's daily, it's the supports, the organs that are necessary to keep us healthy. If we don't have a liver, I think it's called liver for a reason. If you don't have a liver working functionally properly, we're not going to live well. We're not going to thrive. We're just going to be surviving.
[01:28:28:17 - 01:28:37:19]
Leah Bookhamer
We're focusing on longevity, shifting from temporary symptom relief to root cause healing and long-term wellness.
